Sep 08, 2003
Japanese version of the joint EWEA-Greenpeace report- "Wind Force 12- a blueprint to achieve 12 per cent of the worlds electricity from wind power by 2020" launched today in Tokyo to the media, it will also be presented to a workshop (*1 :see the details of the workshop below) of over 100 people from interested sectors: business, finance and NGOs tomorrow September 10th. The report has been translated by Greenpeace Japan and is released in collaboration with the Japanese Wind Energy Association(JWEA) and the Japanese Wind Power Association(JWPA). A special article on the present status of wind power in Japan has been produced by Dr..Hikaru Matsumiya of the JWEA in this Japanese version.
The report details how the wind industry sector, currently a 7 billion euro industry, is able to grow to a 75 billion euro annual industry by 2020.
"The European wind industry dominates the global market, taking 89 per cent last year. Wind power is the fastest growing energy technology. We are in Japan to explain the success of wind power to date and highlight the potential for Japanese business sectors to participate in the lucrative future global markets. Japan could be a leader in this sector", said Corin Millais, CEO of the European Wind Energy Association, who is in Japan to launch the report(*2).
Dr. Hikaru Matsumiya stated in the report that although the goal in Wind Force 12 is challenging to meet, the success of the European industry has created history in the wind sector, with its rapid progress, there is a lot for Japan to learn.
"By learning from the experiences of the European industry, this will help to tackle the barriers facing the wind industry in Japan. Japan can take a big role in developing renewable energies for the world", said Ayako Sekine, Greenpeace Japan climate campaigner.
