The 56th Dentsu Advertising Award Winners were announced, and Greenpeace Japan's "Color-me peace placard" that appeared in Asahi Newspaper on 3rd March this year won the Associate Award in the public service advertising category.
The Ad was designed in a color-me blank drawing style, which allowed the artwork to be cut out from the newspaper and instantly turn itself into a peace placard which people can color to their own taste and take it to the street to participate in the peace rally against the United States' war on Iraq. The color-me peace placard ad contributed in boosting the magnitude of the demonstrations to the degree unseen in 30 years in Japan; 8th Mar. attracted 52,000; 21st Mar. 50,000. Hundreds of people showed up with their own cut-out-and-colored placards.
The ad also called for participation in the cyber action to deliver people's voice of opposition to the war to Prime Minister Koizumi, Foreign Minister Kawaguchi and the Diet members. The web view hit recorded 24,800 on the day the ad appeared in newspaper, and a total of 7,000 persons participated in the cyber action.
There were 57 media coverage by April 25th. Coverage was evenly balanced among TV, newspapers, radio, and magazines. Media solution amounted to ¥113,997,683. Many of them used the image of the peace placard.
The Dentsu advertising Award is run by Dentsu Inc. the biggest advertising agency in the world.
The award was established in 1947 for the purpose of raising the standard of advertising planning and creativity in Japan. The award is referred to as the "Grand Prix" of Japan's advertising industry, and it is often said, "the history of the Dentsu Advertising Awards is the history of postwar Japanese advertising creativity."
The winners were selected from among advertisements that ran between April 1, 2002 and March 31, 2003. A total of 2,609 entries were submitted to the Screening Committee this year.
The awards will be presented at the 56th Dentsu Advertising Awards Ceremony, to be held on July 1 at the Takanawa Prince Hotel, in Tokyo. All of the awarded advertising works will be exhibited at the Advertising Museum Tokyo in Shiodome, Tokyo from July 8 to 19 and at four regional offices.
