Toyota is getting in the way of introducing new climate change measures.
California's landmark regulations to control greenhouse gas emissions from motor vehicles is under attack from auto industry organizations, which filed a lawsuit together with car dealers against the California Air Resources Board demanding the roll-back of of new climate protecting regulations.
Toyota is well known for its "ECO" branding, and it ranks top in public environment polls as a environmentally friendly company. But "ECO" Toyota has joined in the litigation as a member of industry groups and is blocking progress to cut global warming emissions.
The regulations articulate the reductions of greenhouse gases from automobiles for the first time anywhere. When implemented they will bring environmental benefits as well as social and economic advantages such as creation of jobs as well as significant positive impacts on the efforts in the United States to combat climate change.
It is not only about California but is a global problem
As the United States accounts for about a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions in the world, unraveling of the regulations means a considerable setback for the world's climate.
Toyota should take the lead
We are seeing a similar picture in Japan, with industry groups, one of which is chaired by the head of Toyota, opposing introduction of policies and measures to tackle climate change.
But it is technology-laden Japanese industries that have huge potentials to make a difference, thus they should take the lead in efforts to mitigate climate change, not preventing change. Toyota, one of Japan's leading companies not only in the automakers, but in the industry as a whole, has quite a crucial role to play.
